The Beginners Guide To Choosing The Right Promotional Print Calendar.

By Hellen Lubanga

Picture this, you’ve dropped by a client’s office to hand-deliver a promotional calendar as a thank you for years of partnership. You have a short conversation reminiscing on what has been a mutually beneficial relationship. You hand the calendar over hopeful that it will take center stage on their wall or desk. The reality however soon hits you as a quick glance back reveals that the client has folded the calendar and tossed it into a desk drawer or cabinet.

This is the fate of thousands of promotional calendars across the globe as many companies do not really take the time to take consumer profiles into account during giveaways.

1. Desk Calendars

As per the name, desk calendars are designed to be placed on the surface tops of furniture such as desks, however, they can also be placed on shelves, bedside tables, or even cabinets.

The best part about desk calendars is that they come in various shapes and sizes. This versatility allows for creative liberties with designs more likely to grab the attention of the target audience.

Desk calendars are best suited for:

  • Clients who predominantly spend a large percentage of their careers seated at a desk
  • Other businesses that host potential clientele such as hostels, air-bnb’s, student hostels, or basically any type of business that has stayed over clients who would interact with the calendars during their stay.
  • Clients you want to move onto the next stage on the customer’s journey. For instance, after a sales pitch, it is advisable to leave behind a token of appreciation that the client will interact with on a regular basis.
  • Event management /planning companies, companies that are involved in some form of planning tend to utilize calendars heavily as their entire business revolves around scheduling and marking important dates. In such a situation desk calendars that have an in-built planning aspect such as a larger date section and note writing section go a long way.

2. Wall calendars

Wall calendars are appreciated mostly for their quick glance aspect. It, therefore, comes to no surprise that individuals who prefer wall calendars most are those that:

  • Do not have much space to work with. Unlike desk calendars, wall calendars do not require surfaces and can be hung on the wall out of the way.
  • Work in a busy fast-paced environment. Businesses that tend to have a constant activity such as production lines, conveyor belts, hands-on projects, etc. would most benefit from wall calendars as all members can consult one central calendar rather than having to walk over to their desk calendar
  • Work in an industry where a surface calendar hazard would be considered a health or safety violation such as a kitchen at a restaurant.
  • Have designated areas specifically meant for meet-ups and socialization, this includes break rooms, conference halls, Co-working spaces, etc.

3. Pocket Calendars

Pocket calendars are made for people who are on the go. They are meant to fit easily in purses, pockets, bags, briefcases, etc., and are mostly meant to act as a reminder aid for individually set goals and projects. They mostly act as a backup to phone calendars as they are crash-proof and can be retrieved easily and while notes can be jotted down quickly.

Those who would find pocket calendars ideal include:

  • Those whose careers take them to the client/consumer such as salespeople, door-to-door evangelists, and courier/delivery persons. Phone calendars tend not to come off as professional and therefore they are more likely to appreciate the portable nature of pocket calendars.
  • Pocket calendars are also popular with clientele who hold a preference for physical calendars. This is especially common with seniors who appreciate physical calendars over digital calendars.
  • Lastly, there are the clients who have grown to rely on your company calendars. If your giveaways have been going on for a while with the same customer base then brand awareness isn’t as prevalent a goal anymore. In such situations, it is all about maintaining the existing relationships with your clients. Pocket calendars work best in such situations as not only do they feel more personalized, but they are a sustainable option when compared to other promotional giveaways.
